Features of Indian Railways

The core services of Indian railways are described here in detail.

Ticket Booking: According to the IRCTC, daily 500K to 1M tickets booked online on their website. On the IRCTC, passengers can select either an E-Ticket or I-Ticket option. If the passenger has reserved under the E-Ticket option, either an SMS or soft copy or print out of the ticket can be shown to the Ticket collector during the journey. Whereas in case of I-Ticket option, the IRCTC sends a hard copy of the ticket to the passenger which needs to be provided at the time of travel.

Apart from this, passengers can also book tickets by physically going to the railway stations. A hard copy of the ticket will be provided at the booking counters.

PNR Status: How to know if the waitlisted ticket is confirmed or not? To know this, one has to check the booking status by using the Passenger name record number. The status can be changed at any time until the chart is prepared. The chart is finalized two or three hours before the train starts at the origin. Once the chart preparation is done, there are no further changes to the status of the ticket booking.

The PNR number generation, seat allocation, and berth adjustment is a very complex logic which is handled by the Indian railway software. Going into details of this is out of the scope of this article.

Time Table: The time table provides the schedule of the train. Either the train name or the number is used to retrieve the schedule. This feature is very helpful in planning our journey. We can select a train that is convenient for our timings. And also, some times the schedule of the rail will change due to unseen issues. By checking the schedule before boarding the rail can be helpful in these scenarios.

Live Train Status: There is a big difference between the schedule and live train running status. Many of the passengers don’t know this difference at all and often gets confused between these two. The live train status provides the exact location of the train in real time. This is one of the popular services of IR especially used to track the live location of the train.

Fare Calculation: Before booking the ticket, we can know the price that costs for the travel. The fare calculation involves many variables which include the type of rail, distance traveling, compartment class. Typically, the fare increases with the class and distance. However, there are some luxury trains whose fare is even costlier than a flight.

FNR Enquiry: FNR is an 11 digit number used for tracking the freight. Delivering goods through the land mode of transport system takes more time. The FNR helps in getting the status of the goods delivery. It provides information like the location of the package and the expected delivery date.

Trains Between Stations: Daily thousands of trains run across India and the trains stop only at their designated stations. To know all the trains that run between two particular stations, we can use the trains running between stations feature. This will give the list of trains along with their timings.
