Everyone in India might have traveled at least once in the Indian railways. One of the most common problems with the Indian railways is that they never arrive at the station in time. On average, a train will be delayed by 30mins to 2 hours. Most of the times the Indian railway tracks are busy with the trains and on top of that the bad track conditions add up to the delays. Under these circumstances, the passengers who are traveling on the train and also their family members want to know at what time the train will reach their destination station.
The national train enquiry system(NTES) of Indian Railways has come up with a great feature called the train running status which provides the tracking of the live location of running rail.
Live Train Running Status
Now you can appreciate the importance of checking the live rail status. Let see the steps to track the live position of a rail in real time. The Indian Railways will soon launch a new look of the NTES website. The images provided here are the screenshots of the new portal.
How the Tracking of Feature Works
To track the live position, we need a GPS system to be equipped on the rail. However, the Indian railways do not use the GPS system at all. It, in fact, uses the signaling system used in tracking and guiding the drivers. Technically, whenever a rail engine crosses a poll, it sends out a signal to the monitoring system. This monitoring application will know roughly in which location the rail is. This application also updates the location of the compartment in a database. As we get the position only when it crosses a poll or a railway station, we will not get the actual location of the train.
How to Spot your Train
This is the part which you need to focus on and know how to get the position of a running rail. Follow the below guide:
Visit the NTES website and look for the below box where you have to enter the train name or number. As soon as you start entering, the name, you will get suggestions with all the matching train names. Select the rail name that you want to check for. This process is shown in the below screenshot.
The second step is to select the station name. As soon as you place the cursor in the Journey/Boarding/Arrival station box, the NTES system will out all the stations where the compartment car stops and displays them in a list format. Select the station to know the arrival time. You can check the below image for a sample.
The third step is to select the date on which rail arrives at the station. You should have an idea at what time the rail has started at the origin and at what time it reaches the selected station. Depending on this you have to select the date.
As soon as you select the date, the NTES system displays the below information:
- Status: Whether the train has departed or not from the selected station.
- Queried Station: The chosen station name.
- Actual Arrival Time: At what time the rail arrives at the station.
- Current position: Whether rail is running or not.
- Last Updated Station: The last known position of the rail.
- Actual Departure: At what time the rail has left the selected station.
- Delay: By how many minutes or hours, the rail has been delayed.
- Distance: The amount of distance that the train has to travel to the selected station traveled from the selected station.
This is how you can check the live location of a running car. You will also get an estimate of time by which you will reach the destination. Especially during festival seasons, the Indian railways run some special cars which increase the time of your journey. Other than this, some natural calamities and unforeseen issues also will increase your travel time.
It is always better to plan your journey so that you will reach your destination without any problems. Always travel in an express train that travels through the shortest path and halts at a minimum number of stations. For example, the Simhadri express travels from Secunderabad railway station to Gudur via Vijayawada. This route is fully occupied with many other expresses. On the other hand, Narayanadri express travels from Secunderabad to Gudur via Guntur junction. This route is less occupied and also the distance is less compared to the other route. In this route, the travel time reduces by 30 mins.
Apart from the Spot your train service, the NTES system also offers the below services
- Live Station
- Trains Between Stations
- Canceled Rails
- Partially Cancelled
- IR rail Tracker
- Special Rails
- Average Delay
- Heritage Rails
- PNR Status
This guide helps in understanding more about the services of Indian railways. In short, the train running status feature helps the passengers in knowing the last known location of the rail, by how much delay they are traveling and also by what time they reach the destination. Just go to the NTES portal, select the train and track the live location.
